The predominant colours of any rusty old car are shades of red. To create some variations in my designs I transformed this rear door panel into the negative of rust which is green. A couple of the greens were too yellow so I made them more turquoise to match the overall tone of this scarf.

I love the mix of blues, reds and pinks on the rear mud-guard. It is almost like an archaeological dig as I peer through the layers of very thick paint which are further enhanced by the deep scratches and patches of rust. If the panels could talk I wonder what stories they would tell.

The gouge line on the driver’s door panel attracted my eye. When I adjusted the colour balance to cooler tones and made the reds more saturated I was able to emphasise the blues in the paint. The rust then took on a purple haze.

  • 38 Humber Hood

This engine grill/hood stands out as the only scarf design that is recognisable as a car part but the strength of the pattern really appealed to me! I used a similar processing technique as for the door panel. The bright orange patches were a bonus that work really well with the overall design.

This car is my favourite shape, I love the long sweeping sexy curves that go all the way from the roof to the boot! The kaleidoscope of colours is amazing and the closer you look the more colours there are.

A classic ute. The cracked paint is so thick. I am sure modern cars do not have anywhere near the amount of layers and thickness of paint. I played with several colour variations trying to highlight the strength of the pattern. In the end it was a close decision to proceed with the dominant red toned one.

I loved the turquoise and rust coloured rear panel featuring the petrol cap cover plate when I first looked at this car. It was easy to emphasis those existing colours which contrast so nicely together.

  • 52 FX Holden Ute

One of Australia’s earliest Holden Utes! From the original car photo you can see this one has certainly seen better days given it is missing its roof. The few remaining paint flakes on the bonnet were enough to form the basis of this scarf design.

It was hard to see this car peeking beneath a pile of leaves and branches from an overhanging gum tree. The boot was completely covered in a type of lichen which covered the original blue blistered paint. The final scarf has a much calmer colour palette than the rest of the collection. Despite its overall subtle tone it is surprising how many other colours are in the detail of this design.

Easily my favourite design. The red rust streaks down the rear panel over the green-blue paint. The tiny white patches of lichen remind me so much of a coral reef surrounded by warm inviting tropical sea. The vibrant colours are just so rich on the silk satin georgette which is the perfect fabric for this design.
